Echolocation

In 1972, it was established that the upper hearing threshold of orcas is 31 kHz, which is significantly lower than that of bottlenose dolphins. The range of greatest sensitivity was recorded from 5 to 30 kHz. A 1999 study shows that the highest hearing sensitivity of orcas corresponds to a frequency of 20 kHz; however, a response was detected in both examined orcas to sounds at a frequency of 100 kHz.
Each pod has its own vocal dialect, which includes sounds produced only by the animals of that pod as well as sounds common to all orcas. Although a pod is very stable, it can nevertheless split into several parts, especially during food searches.
Several pods of orcas may join together for cooperative hunting or various social interactions. Since all members of a pod are related to each other, orca mating is presumed to occur during the merging of multiple pods.
