The Beluga’s Roar

Belugas are social creatures. Due to the variety of sounds they produce, Americans have nicknamed the beluga the "sea canary," while Russians have the phrase "to roar like a beluga." (In the Russian North, the beluga is often called "beluga.") Researchers have identified about 50 vocal signals (whistles, squeals, chirps, clucks, grating sounds, piercing cries, roars). In addition, belugas use body language for communication (slapping the water with their tail fins).
In the 19th century, two spellings of this animal’s name were common: "belukha" and "beluga." In modern language, the word "beluga" primarily refers to the beluga sturgeon fish but sometimes also denotes the marine mammal.
This phrase is usually used colloquially. "To roar like a beluga" means ‘to cry loudly and uncontrollably.’ Sometimes the verb "to howl" is used instead of "to roar."
